When John Coltrane left Miles Davis' band, it took some time before the ideal combination was found again. In 1962 Miles formed what later would be called the "Second Great Quintet" with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

Prince of Darkness was on the second album by this band: Sorcerer. Originally the song - like the rest of that record - had an atmosphere that can be described as dark and gloomy.

Bob arranged the song into a energetic uptempo with a virtuoso special.
